Tutorial 1

Titel:

Managing a Technical Workforce:  Building Process Capability Requires Developing Capable People
(Gian Wemyss / SEI)

Datum und Uhrzeit:
Montag, 9. Mai 2011 von 10:05 bis 12:40 Uhr

Beschreibung:
Implementing capable processes requires capable people.  CMMI assists organizations in building capable processes in order to achieve predictable performance in the development, acquisition and services for software-intensive systems.  While CMMI does focus on improving process and technology for improved performance, it does not adequately address the people aspects, building individual capability and managing the workforce, of improved performance.  In order to build workforce capability, organizations must develop managers that take responsibility and authority for managing, developing, and motivating individuals who are under their direction. This Tutorial will address the roles and responsibilities of the manager to manage a workforce towards improved performance, how managers can implement practices to bring change, and introduces the concept of a manager’s toolkit.

Goal/Results
1.    Understand the role of a manager in building a capable workforce to implement capable processes.
2.    Identify the six management tools to build workforce capability and manage improved performance.
3.    Introduce the concept of a Manager’s Tool Kit for organizations to develop managers that take responsibility and authority for managing, developing, and motivating individuals who are under their direction.
4.    Understand how the People CMM, when implemented in conjunction with process improvement activities improves performance.

Zielgruppe

  • Individuals responsible for the implementation of process models, methods and tools seeking improved process performance through improved workforce capability.
  • Managers responsible for managing, developing, and motivating individuals who are under their direction.
  • Individuals responsible for the development of management practices.

Referent:

Gian Wemyss is a Senior Member of the Technical Staff and Team Lead for the People CMM Project, with the Software Engineering Process Management (SEPM) Program at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI)/Carnegie Mellon University. SEPM helps organizations and individuals to improve their software and systems engineering management practices.

Gian assists organizations in successfully addressing their critical human capital issues through the use of the SEI’s People Capability Maturity Model® (People CMM®).  Gian’s work at the SEI also includes the identification, development, and application of practices that result in rapid, affordable, and sustained transition of innovative software and systems engineering management technologies developed at the SEI. This includes work on the development of interpretive guidance for users of Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI®), and the development of a disciplined transition planning method for technology transition and change management practices.
